Mundati is a company that works to develop innovative and sustainable hygiene and sanitary solutions, in other words – toilets designed for urban and rural areas in developing countries, refugee camps, disaster areas and in areas where water supply and sewage is missing. They have now been granted a little more than SEK 800,000 from Vinnova in the context of the announcement the Circular Flow – a venture in circular bio-based economy. The project is called “Recycling Custom Sanitation Solutions” and aims to lay the foundation for a major project.
– The pre-project shall identify how the product fits into a circular flow. Which parts of the product are suitable for recycling, which are suitable for repair and redistribution as well as which parts can be newly manufactured in an energy-efficient manner, explains Marcus Elmer, project manager at Paper Province, who has been involved in writing the application.
– The toilet must fit into a circular flow and be made from bio-based materials. This is where we enter the picture. For us at Paper Provence, the circular flow is very important, as is the use of bio-based materials. We will therefore support with material expertise, explains Elmer.
Safety and health
The portable toilet will be operated using solar energy. It must must make it possible to transform organic waste product into fertiliser, convert wall, roof and structure material into fuel, redistribute metal and electronics and introduce incentives to ensure recycling and ensure health and safety. For example, many women do not dare relieve themselves for fear of attack, which in many instances leads to health problems. Mundati’s sanitation solution should therefore be equipped with an alarm.
Products have great potential to make a difference. Globally, there are 2.5 billion people without sanitary facilities. This opens up the possibility of changing this, since the hope is that the product will be made so well that help organisations will be motivated to invest in them.
Confidence in the future is that we believe that we could deliver 10-20 thousand units/year in the course of five years.
The total budget for the project is closer to SEK 1.6 million. The feasibility study will stretch into May 2017. Already now, there are plans to submit an application next year for future development projects within the field.
