Lignin is one of the most occurring polymers in the biosphere, and it plays a central role in many technical important processes. In spite of this, the relationship between its structure and its function is not intensively discussed. Based on several years of structural studies and with arguments from both physical experiments and model compound experiments, a suggestion for how lignin fulfill its biological functions is suggested, that is based on the multiple covalent bonds between lignin and polysaccharides. This model can shortly be described as that lignin works as a curing agent for wood.
